WMATA Metro Cherry Blossom Forecast

Every spring, Washington, D.C.’s cherry blossoms draw millions of visitors from around the world, transforming the city into one of the most recognizable seasonal destinations in the country. But with peak bloom lasting only a short window, timing is everything.

For WMATA Metro, the Cherry Blossom Festival presents a unique challenge. The system must serve a massive influx of visitors, while also encouraging local riders to avoid congestion and choose transit over driving. At the same time, the festival is saturated with competing brands and activations, making it difficult to stand out without relying on large paid media campaigns.

Rather than simply promoting Metro as a way to get there, the opportunity was to make Metro an essential part of the experience itself.

THE INSIGHT

People don’t just want to see the cherry blossoms, they want to see them at the right time.

Each year, bloom predictions become a major moment in local news, with weather outlets tracking the progression from bud to peak bloom. Riders are already looking for this information, but it isn’t always easy to find or tied to how they’ll actually get there.

THE IDEA

Turn Metro into the most reliable source for cherry blossom updates.

INTRODUCING THE BLOSSOM FORECAST

A dynamic, weather-inspired system that tracks the real-time status of the cherry blossoms, from first buds to peak bloom and beyond.

By bringing bloom data directly into stations and social feeds, Metro becomes more than transportation, it becomes a guide to the experience.

EXECUTION/OUTCOME

The Blossom Forecast was designed as a flexible, digital-first system, built to live across Metro’s in-station screens and social channels. Weekly updates would track the bloom cycle in real time, helping riders plan their visits while reinforcing Metro as the easiest way to get there.

Although this direction was not selected for final execution, it demonstrates how Metro’s owned channels can be used to deliver timely, useful information, turning a seasonal moment into an ongoing rider engagement opportunity.
